NCIS Hawai’i fans complain about surprise character absence

NCIS Hawai’i fans aren’t happy with the news that Yasmine Al-Bustami’s Lucy Tara will be absent from the show for the next few weeks.

In Monday night’s (November 14) episode of the spinoff series, Lucy accepted a job offer for the Special Agent Afloat position, which would take her away from girlfriend Kate Whistler (Tori Anderson) for four months.

It wasn’t necessarily the fact that Lucy would be departing that left fans bemused, but rather that the location of the new job doesn’t make sense for the character.

Despite harbouring a fear of water, Lucy’s new position would see her work on a ship, a decision that numerous fans took issue with.

“I was afraid they would make Lucy go to Afghanistan for a secret mission as they did a while back with Kensi – NCIS LA. I am glad they just sent her as an agent afloat but it is funny coz Lucy hates anything water related,” wrote one fan on Twitter.

Another fan pointed out the bizarre contradiction, writing: “tbf I wouldn’t have thought lucy would apply to be agent afloat cause ocean,” whilst another hoped for a storyline which could see the character overcome her aquaphobia.

“I agree that it’s potentially a good move for Lucy’s career and overcoming her fear of water. What doesn’t sit well with me is this is all likely happening off screen without viewers seeing any of it. A character overcoming one of their biggest fears should be on screen,” they wrote.

Some fans were more understanding, however, with one writing: “It’s not really out of character, sure she hates water but Lucy is taking a job that will help her career in the long run, it’s gonna help her NCIS career.”

It is currently unknown how long Lucy’s absence will last for, but the character is expected to feature in the upcoming NCIS crossover event, which is due to air on Monday, January 2, 2023.

NCIS Hawai’i airs on CBS in the US, and on Disney+ in the UK.
